MUNICIPALITY CONDEMNS PURCHASE OF ILLEGAL PREPAID METERS MOKOPANE: The illegal purchase of prepaid meters is a serious concern in South Africa, where there have been reports of fraudulent activities involving the sale and installation of prepaid electricity meters. The Mogalakwena Local Municipality has noted with a great concern that households, businesses and communities across the municipality are purchasing illegal prepaid meters from external service providers such as hardware’s and would like to advice members of the community to refrain from that. The municipality would like to urge members of the community to purchase both electricity and water prepaid meters directly from the municipality since installation should only be done through authorized and licensed municipal electrical services department. Members of the community whom have installed prepaid meters from hardware’s or external service providers are further advised to visit or report this to the municipality before the end of June 2024. Those who will be found to have not reported this will be penalised and a criminal case will be opened against them. The municipality has discovered that there are municipal employees who are installing the prepaid meters to the municipal clients (households, businesses, communities etc) and that is illegal. Those officials (municipal employees) are currently undergoing disciplinary processes because of this act.
